No a$$holes rule


Hey Reader, does your business have a no assholes policy?

I think most businesses should. There should be very few exceptions where a brilliant jerk is tolerated.

This certainly does not seem to be the case, though. Every business ends up collecting one or two of these staff over time, but it is shocking to me how long they are tolerated despite the obvious signs that it isn't working well for the team.

I've been there, I understand some of the justifications we make in our head about why we should keep that person. Some are reasonable points. Still, ultimately, those reasons don't justify keeping the problem employee.

Everyone is replacebale. It's a harsh truth, but true all the same. Tearing off the band-aid is painful, and there is, undoubtedly, a downside impact, BUT!

In almost every case I've seen where the problem team member finally gets let go, there is a collective sigh of relief from the team.

Don't drag this out any longer than you need to. If you have someone who is a brilliant jerk, be transparent with them and encourage them to change. Provide them all the support you can. Ultimately, this is their choice to change. You can't make them. If they refuse to change, then you can help them find somewhere else to be miserable. ;)
