Killer quote on mediocrity

Hey Reader, I heard this quote last week and immediately sat up and wrote it down.

Mediocrity is invisible until passion shows up and exposes it
- Graham Cooke

This describes exactly what I tend to see in a lot of organizations.

Owners and leaders are quietly frustrated with the results they are getting from their team.

Despite what everyone wishes were true about their companies, mediocrity is more common than we'd like to admit.

The number one thing that people ask me about getting help with is accountability.

The dirty secret is that mediocrity and accountability are two sides of the same coin.

Leaders have more influence over their company culture than they give themselves credit for. Accepting a culture of mediocrity is a slow creep over years. At some point people cared and did their best, but with less challenge and lower standards, the culture slips in to mediocrity and accountability vaporizes because it isn't required in order to get by.

Humans are very efficient at how they use calories and no one will burn excess energy to work hard when the bare minimum seems to be what everyone else is contributing.

Don't accept mediocrity. That was not the standard you set. It's just where you've devolved into. You have the power to invigorate your company culture with passion and reset the expectations of the team.

It will take some work and you need to help people form new habits, but it's worth the invetsment.

Have a productive Week!
Todd

Hi Reader. Running an MSP is challenging. One of the most common challenges is getting people to enter time in the PSA. I've worked with MSPs that are 5 people and MSPs that are 350 people. This problem exists in all of them, but there are patterns that are worth noting and learning from. The core truth is that this is a fixable problem. I know a small number of companies that do not have to fight with staff each week to get time entered in the system. So what have they figured out that the...

Hey Reader! Productivity is a tricky thing. There are so many philosophies, tools, habits, and systems out there. One of the most effective strategies I use is "WITNS" - What Is The Next Step. Being clear on what the next action you need to take helps reduce decision fatigue by giving you clarity on what action to take. This works at both a macro and micro level. On a macro level, knowing what is the next activity or action you should work is valuable. Sometimes it's just a quick activity to...

Hey Reader, we don't talk about our health enough in our industry. I'm hoping we can shift that a bit. The majority of us our sitting at a desk for most of our day and eating overly processed food in between fires. We work long hours, we don't get enough sleep, and then we drink alcohol to manage stress. This is a slow road to misery. This week, I posted a podcast episode with Paul Vedder, CEO of an MSP called VXIT in Florida. Paul lived this same routine for years building his business,...
